The clever shape melts slowly, keeps drinks cold, and is fun to chew on afterward. Nugget ice is small enough to pack into a cup or glass, while the compressed layers of frozen water comprising each well-honed nugget allow liquid to flow around - and indeed nearly through - each piece of ice. No surprise, then, that so many folks have a thing for nugget ice.Īlso known as pellet ice or even Sonic ice, the superiority of nugget ice comes from its diminutive size and irresistible texture. Too much ice, and there’s not enough room for the intended beverage too little, and we’re left with a watered-down tipple. Maybe we’re served the occasional cocktail with a remarkably precise cube, or we find ourselves in a hotel room with an ice bucket, and we’ll think, “cool” (with no pun intended, of course) and move on with our day.īut anyone who has lamented the rapid melting of ice - with nothing to show for the crystalline cubes other than a diluted drink - can understand the importance of shape and quantity. Chewy, airy, and crunchable. Most of us probably don’t spend much time thinking about ice. The ice is just what you want it to be.The drip tray is part of its thoughtful design. The Opal 2.0 design is much sleeker and contemporary.Ice doesn’t clump together, no need to break apart the ice if it’s been in the bin for several days. The machine somehow keeps the stored ice in the bin frozen. My family of three isn’t even getting close to using that much per day. I don’t use either of those so that feature is wasted on me, but super cool for those who have it. It has built-in wifi and voice control with Alexa or Google. The dimensions of the Opal 2.0 are slightly different than its predecessor. It had a smaller footprint than I had expected and it fit nicely under my upper kitchen cabinets. I was pleasantly surprised by its size. What I Like About the GE Opal 2.0 Ice Maker It holds water so that the ice maker can make three times more ice during heavy usage and reduces filling up the regular reservoir. 75-gallon side tank accessory: It would be cool if this came standard. It’s definitely louder than running a dishwasher but not nearly as loud as a blender. While I want the machine to do that, the constant noise of it making ice can be somewhat annoying. As soon as you scoop out ice for your drink, the machine kicks back on to make more ice.The manufacturer says that most noises cease after 20-30 minutes of the unit running. But remember, the ice maker is made of a compressor, a pump, motors and fans. If you have heavy minerals in your water, an additional vinegar rinse is suggested.Cleaning and maintenance: the manufacturer recommends weekly cleaning and sanitizing of the water reservoir which includes draining the unit, adding a water/bleach solution, and three rinse cycles.I’m going to start with the cons of GE Opal 2.0.
